Anthrax in West Bengal

West Bengal government confirms the outbreak of animal disease-anthrax in the state. Six cows died in Bhojanerchhara village of Cooch Behar district, about 800km from Kolkata. When the dead samples of the cow were tested, it was found that these cows died of anthrax. It is afraid that this disease may have affected many other cows also. As a precautionary measure, all the cows are vaccinated in that area. Already West Bengal suffers from outbreak of bird flu. In addition to this there is an outbreak of Anthrax now.

Anthrax is a disease in humans and animals that is caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. Anthrax is a bacteria that can form long-lived spores. When the bacteria's lifecycle is threatened by factors such as lack of food caused by their host dying or by a change of temperature, the bacteria turn themselves into more or less dormant spores to wait for another host to continue their lifecycle.

Anthrax cannot spread directly from one person to another, but anthrax spores can be transported from one human to another by their clothing and shoes. If a person dies of anthrax, the body can be a very dangerous source of anthrax spores.
